How often do I need exit and emergency light testing?
According to the AS2293.2 standard for emergency lighting testing & inspection, all emergency luminaries and exit signs need to be inspected at 6-monthly intervals. During the inspection, a trained individual must test the lamps and replace any defective lights. Each device will also undergo a discharge test in which a technician will turn the battery charger off and simulate a power outage for a duration of 90 minutes. The test will continue until every emergency light or exit sign is tested.
Your lighting system should receive another test every 12 months with all the same procedures as the 6-monthly test, plus the inspection and cleaning of fittings and reflective surfaces. It is important that you hire a professional to test your system instead of simply replacing the battery on your own. Without a formal discharge test, you could be unaware of potential power failures in your system. A trained technician will be able to identify any faults in your lighting through thorough inspection and compliance with the current safety standards.
Emergency and Exit Light Rule
If your business is based in a building, you need to have clear evacuation strategies in place for emergencies. Emergency light testing and exit light testing will ensure your business has a clear exit path in place in case of an emergency. Evacuation lighting is essential during blackouts and electrical failure, as well as during a fire. A clearly lit path can reduce panic and increase the chances of your staff avoiding any harm.
At Auckland Fire Safety, we are a team of trained fire safety testing technicians. We can inspect and test your emergency lighting system and maintain safety in your building. Ask one of our team members to visit your workplace today. Our mobile service means that you can access emergency light maintenance when it is convenient for you.
According to the Building Code of New Zealand, an emergency lighting system must be installed on every level of a building where a storey has a floor space of more than 300m2. The system must be installed in every hallway that is part of an evacuation path, or in any room that has a floor space more than 100m2 that does not open to a hallway. Exit signs must be clearly visible and installed above doors that lead to any required exits or roads/open space. For more information regarding building compliance/exit and emergency light testing, you can take a look at the code or contact one of our team members to discuss your obligations.
Light Globe Supply and Replacement
It is a requirement under the AS2293.2 standard that any faulty lamps are replaced during the 6-monthly inspection. A member of our fire safety testing team can complete your emergency lights testing and replace any broken globes. Ask our technicians about energy efficient replacement globes. Replacing incandescent globes with energy efficient luminaries will help to reduce lighting costs in your building as well as your impact on the environment.
An incandescent light globe is a light that uses a wire filament. This type of globe has been phased out since 2007 in Australia, but there is a chance there could be some left in some buildings. The incandescent light bulb is significantly less efficient than modern alternatives. Enquire today to find out more about your energy efficient light replacement options. An Auckland Fire Safety technician can help you update your lighting system today.

Why is electrical test and tag important?
Every business has an obligation to provide a safe workplace as far as reasonably practicable, and one area of concern is electrical safety. Under the new Fire and Emergency Australia and New Zealand Fire Safety Evacuation Procedures and Evacuation Schemes Regulations 2018, it is now mandatory.
Electrical testing of equipment is essential to ensure the health and safety of your employees and that of others who visit your workplace. Being aware of these hazards allows you to take action and ensure that no one person is at risk while using the equipment.
Electrical equipment can get less reliable with age – just like everything else. Even though a device may have been safe a year ago, doesn’t mean it remains safe for use today. It’s important to make sure your equipment undergoes tagging and regular maintenance that will identify hazards as they arise. This way, one of our expert team members always follows safety regulations, always performs safety testing and can detect an issue before a tragedy occurs.
What type of appliances need electrical safety testing?
Any equipment that is connected to the electrical supply by a flexible cord and/or connecting device. It may include pieces of equipment that are or have been:
- Being used for the first time
- Already being used
- Has recently been serviced or repaired
- Returning to service from a second-hand sale
- Available for hire
It also applies to certain forms of residual current devices (RCDs). The equipment we test can vary greatly from business to business. If you’re unsure which items you’d like tested, contact us for a chat today. We’ve worked with a large number of unique companies so we can offer some insight into your specific safety needs.
When does the equipment need electrical safety testing?
Frequency varies according to the type of environment and/or equipment. Electrical test tags should be applied at the following intervals:
*please note, these intervals dictate the maximum time frame for testing in each environment. Depending on your equipment/workplace, further tests will need to be conducted more frequently. For more information, contact us today or refer to the AS/NZS 3760 standard.
